Phoenix PD conducts review into how prisoner escaped

A 29-year-old man is back in custody after he ran out the back door of the Cactus Park Precinct Thursday night while he was being processed for outstanding warrants.

Derek Posey was being processed about 8 p.m. Dec. 7 for felony warrants for aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest, authorities said.

“During the processing, officers lost sight of him while inside a north Phoenix police station,” police said in a release, adding the man had run out the back door of the precinct and away from the area.

“Containment was established around the precinct and the neighborhood while officers conducted a thorough search. At about 8:45 p.m., citizens at a nearby gas station noticed a man in handcuffs, detained him and called police.”

Police said “at no time” did the man pose a threat to the community. He was taken to the hospital for precaution.

After being released from the hospital, he will be booked into the Maricopa County Jail for additional felony charges along with his outstanding warrants, according to the release.

Details of how the man escaped from the precinct are under internal review, police said.
