Phoenix, other cities wary of state’s attempt to limit rental tax revenues

Phoenix City Council members are speaking out against attempts in the state legislature to remove rental taxes, which would result in an annual revenue cut of about $80 million for Phoenix.

They are among a number of cities questioning the move amid concerns about what it would do to city budgets as well as a larger issue of cities concerned about the legislature stripping away control on local issues.

“Certainly, it is frustrating to think that we’re doing all the right things,” said Councilor Ann O’Brien, “and yet the state legislature is continuing to try to strip away local control from cities all over the state and could have severe adverse impacts on communities. Fortunately… we’re in fairly good condition. That cannot be said for all communities across the state.”
