Phoenix officials say short-term water future is secure, plan efficiencies for drier climate

While next year’s expected Colorado River water supply shortage won’t affect Phoenix residents or city government, city officials say they’re ready for a shortage and continue to look for ways to use water more efficiently.

“Phoenix has been preparing for shortage for decades,” said the city’s Water Resources Management Advisor Cynthia Campbell during Tuesday’s City Council meeting. “Phoenix has developed a robust and diverse water portfolio, continues to invest in efficient infrastructure and fosters a culture of conservation within city operations and among its customers.”

Campbell said decades of preparation for water shortage at City Hall has left the city’s water future secure through at least 2025, and there is time to plan for the long-term future.
