Man shot, killed by Phoenix officers identified

Posted

An armed man was shot and killed Monday night by Phoenix police officers who responded to a home invasion call in South Phoenix, police said.

On Wednesday, the suspect has been identified as 41-year-old Carlos Fregoso.

The call came in about 10 p.m. Nov. 4, and a two-person patrol unit went to the 1500 block of West Wier Avenue, which is near 15th Avenue and Chipman Road.

The caller told 911 operators a man was forcing his way into the home and was armed with a handgun.  When officers arrived, they found a pickup leaving the area with the suspect possibly inside, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.

The officers turned on lights and sirens, but the pickup driver failed to stop. A brief pursuit ended when the truck crashed into a block wall, police said.

The man got out of the pickup with a gun in hand and, according to the release, “officers gave the man commands to stop and drop the gun as the man continued to run towards a residential home.

“As the man reached the driveway of the residence, he raised a gun towards the officers which resulted in the officers firing their handguns.”

After the shooting, officers provided medical aid until fire department personnel arrived and determined the man died from his injuries. Detectives recovered two handguns near the suspect and a rifle inside the pickup, police said.

Authorities said the man was the suspect involved in the initial home invasion call. An investigation is underway.
