An officer-involved shooting Wednesday was followed by chase that ended with an SUV crashing in a Phoenix neighborhood, police said.
Detectives are investigating the shooting that occurred about 5:30 p.m. Feb. 12 near 8000 North 29th Avenue.
Officers assigned to the Cactus Park Precinct were in the area of 29th and Northern avenues “conducting proactive policing,” according to a Phoenix Police Department release.
Several officers attempted to contact two men in an SUV, giving commands for the driver to stop the vehicle.
“The driver refused and instead attempted to drive away from officers at a high rate of speed. While doing so, the SUV drove in the direction of an officer, at which time the officer involved shooting occurred. In total, two officers fired their firearms during this encounter,” the release stated.
The SUV continued to accelerate and take off from officers. A pursuit began. The SUV was followed to the area of 59th and Northern avenues, where the passenger left the SUV and ran into a nearby apartment complex.
The driver of the SUV continued to drive away from the area until the vehicle was involved in a single-vehicle collision in the same neighborhood. The driver was arrested, police said.
The man who had run from the vehicle prior to the collision was found and arrested after officers set up a perimeter around the apartment complex.
The men were taken to a hospital for treatment for at least one gunshot wound each, police said.
