A Phoenix officer has been released from a hospital and is recovering at home after police said she was assaulted outside a business in South Phoenix.

Joseph Huggins, 51, has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct. He is being held on a $100,000 bond, police said Saturday.

The incident occurred about 1:15 p.m. May 30, when a six-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department’s South Mountain Precinct responded to a fight call at a business near 1800 West Southern Avenue.

At the scene, she found a man who matched the description of the person reported to be hitting the front door of the business.

“While speaking with the man, he became uncooperative and tried to leave the area,” a department release stated.

The officer attempted to stop the man who began to fight her, police said.

During the fight, the man struck the officer in the face. She fell, and the man left the area. The officer sustained a broken nose and ankle, police said.

A witness called 911 to report the officer was injured and the direction the man was seen walking.

Other officers found the man nearby, and he was arrested after police used "a less-lethal tool," authorities said. He was taken to a hospital where he was medically cleared and booked into jail.
