A man died at a hospital after he was shot by a police officer Tuesday morning outside a Phoenix restaurant.

Officers from the Desert Horizon Precinct arrived at about 4:05 a.m. Aug. 19 in response to a trespassing call at the restaurant near 20th and Northern avenues.

Officers learned as they were on their way to the call that the man was cutting himself inside the restaurant with employees and customers inside, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.

They arrived to find the man holding a hatchet outside the restaurant and began giving him commands to put the hatchet down, police said.

“However he began to walk toward officers. One officer used a less-lethal tool with limited effect on the man,” the release stated.

“As the man moved towards officers, the officer-involved shooting occurred. There was one officer involved in firing his weapon.”

The man, who has not been identified, was taken into custody, provided medical aid and taken to a hospital, where he later died, police said.

The Department of Public Safety will be investigating the shooting.
