The man killed last week in an officer-involved shooting has been identified as 45-year-old Christopher Alan Phillips, Phoenix police said Sunday.
He fled as police were investigating an abandoned property for trespassers and was shot after authorities said he pointed a gun at officers who were chasing him.
Officers from the Maryvale precinct went to a home near 31st Avenue and Baseline Road about 11 a.m. Jan. 17 to investigate a complaint that trespassers were at the property. When they contacted several people, one man jumped a wall onto the north side of Baseline Road, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.
The man ran west along Baseline Road and as officers chased him they saw he had a gun, the release stated.
The man turned north onto 35th Avenue as officers continued to order him to stop.
When he came to “the private entrance of a neighborhood east of 35th Avenue and at about 7300 south, he turned into the private drive.
"The man raised his gun and pointed it in the direction of two officers who were still following him. One officer fired his rifle striking the man,” the release stated.
The man fell to the ground, officers rendered aid, and he was taken to a hospital but did not survive.
Detectives took over the investigation.
