Phoenix museum explores Indigenous identity through contemporary art

S’eḏav Va’aki Museum exhibit brings together works by 10 Native American artists

S’eḏav Va’aki Museum in Phoenix will open “Indigenous Identities,” a contemporary art exhibition examining the connections between cultural identity, personal experience and Indigenous life in 21st-century America. The exhibit opens Oct. 8 and will remain on display through July 2027.

The exhibition features work by 10 Native American artists from across the United States. Through their work, the artists address themes including sovereignty, cultural expression, ancestral stories and connections to ancestral lands, while exploring identity from both personal and collective perspectives.

“Cultural identity shapes how individuals see themselves, understand others, and move through the world,” museum Curator of Exhibits Caitlin Dichter shared in a press release. “Many artists use their culture, memories, and life experiences in their work.”
