Phoenix moving shelter to larger hotel to house homeless seniors

At the start of the coronavirus pandemic when homeless shelters were short on beds because of physical distancing requirements, the city of Phoenix and a local nonprofit converted a former hotel into a temporary shelter for seniors experiencing homelessness.

That temporary shelter is now continuing into at least 2022 and doubling in size.

In May 2020, Phoenix City Council approved a partnership with Central Arizona Shelter Services and a local hotel to create a temporary homeless shelter for people 55 and older in the former hotel, providing 95 individual rooms to allow for appropriate physical distancing. The shelter, named Project Haven, operated from June 2020 through September 2021.
