President Joe Biden met virtually with Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego and San Antonio’s mayor for a news conference last week to lay out new and ongoing efforts at the local and federal levels to address the impact of heat in various communities.
The Valley has seen repeated days of blistering temperatures during the past month as Sunday was the 31st straight days of Phoenix temperatures hitting at least 110 degrees Fahrenheit, extending a record. The previous record had been 18 days in a row set in 1974. That streak was forecasted to end on Monday.
“It’s taking a real toll on our community,” Gallego said during the video call. “We feel like we are very much on the front lines of climate change.”
