The city of Phoenix is putting more help into the fight of opioid overdoses this week by putting free packs of the opioid-reversal nasal spray naloxone at each city library.
Last year, 991 people in Phoenix died from drug overdoses and Phoenix firefighters responded to more than 3,800 overdose-related calls. Phoenix officials hope to reduce that number by getting naloxone, also known by the brand-name Narcan, into the hands of more people.
“The bottom line is the more Phoenicians who carry Narcan, the fewer will die,” Vice Mayor Yassamin Ansari said at a media event Monday at Burton Barr Central Library.
