Phoenix makes historic preservation rehab money available

Posted

The Phoenix Planning and Development Department has announced there will be another round of grants for those interested in rehabilitating their historic homes.

Voters approved more than $42 million in bond funds from 1989 through 2006 for historic preservation.

The money was used “to enhance, preserve and protect dozens of city-owned historic properties in Phoenix,” a city release stated.

Funds also were used to establish multiple grant programs for private property owners, including the Exterior Rehabilitation Grant Program.

The last of the 2006 Exterior Rehabilitation bond funds was allocated in 2015, and no grant rounds occurred from 2016 through 2020.

However, in 2021, the Phoenix City Council set aside $200,000 from the General Fund to reestablish the program.

The funds were awarded to 12 grant applicants last fiscal year.

The council has approved another $200,000 for exterior rehabilitation grants for the 2022-23 fiscal year, the release stated.

Applications for the new fiscal year are being accepted.

As was the case in 2021, this year's program offers more funding and flexibility than in previous years:

  • Applications are now submitted electronically.
  • One cost estimate is required for each work item instead of two.
  • Instead of a $10,000 limit, applicants may request up to $20,000 in funding.

Applications for this round of funding are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov.18, 2022.

A virtual grant workshop will take place 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept.15.

A WebEx meeting link will be provided on the city of Phoenix Historic Preservation Office website approximately 48 hours before the workshop begins, according to the release.

The workshop will also be recorded so it can be viewed later.
