Phoenix looks to expand e-scooter map outside of downtown

The city of Phoenix is considering expanding its e-scooter program outside downtown.

The city’s e-scooter pilot program that has operated in 2 square miles around downtown Phoenix has been extended through March 2022, but city staff want to create a permanent micromobility program to replace it.

The proposed expansion of the area where e-scooters are allowed would create a three-pronged corridor stretching to Cactus Road in the north, Dobbins Road in the south and about 64th Street on the east. The general western border of the area is Interstate 17. The e-scooters operate with “geofencing” technology that causes scooters to shut down if GPS shows they are outside the map boundaries or in “no-ride zones” within the boundary.
