Phoenix looks to ban camping near schools, homeless shelter and child care centers

Heads to city council vote

The city of Phoenix took a step Wednesday to further restrict areas where people experiencing homelessness can camp.

The Public Safety and Justice Subcommittee last week approved a proposal to ban camping within 500 feet of schools, child care centers or homeless shelters. It will go to the full council for final approval.

The city’s camping ordinance already bans camping in any park or preserve, in or next to any city-owned building, facility, parking lot or structure. Camping in preserves is allowed by permit through the Parks and Recreation Department.
