Phoenix looks for ways to help fill vacant stores

With a high rate of vacant storefronts, Phoenix is considering removing red tape around the redevelopment process and providing city resources to assist and incentivize businesses occupy those unused spaces.

Some changes could be making it easier to redevelop the process as something other than commercial, such as multifamily housing, because Phoenix has “too much retail.”

Phoenix Planning & Development Director Alan Stephenson noted Phoenix has 40.5 square feet of retail per person, which is 45% higher than the national average of 28 square feet per person.
