Phoenix lifeguard shortage keeps half of city pools closed

Officials plan ahead to open more pools next summer

After a lifeguard shortage led Phoenix to be able to open fewer than half of its public pools for the second straight summer, city officials are looking to recruit more lifeguards for next year.

“So, it is a year-long process, and we are really trying to rebuild our program is our focus for next year,” Phoenix Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation Tracee Hall told a subcommittee last week.

The lifeguard shortage is nationwide, causing about one-third of swimming pools in the U.S. to close or reduce hours, according to the American Lifeguard Association.
