Phoenix libraries add 425 laptops, 200 WiFi hotspots to lend out

Program designed for students, available for all library card holders

Phoenix libraries soon will double its stock of laptops and WiFi hotspots to loan out for free to the public with the goal of helping Phoenix residents complete their education.

Phoenix City Council accepted $835,000 from the Arizona Department of Education last Wednesday, Sept. 8 to buy 425 more laptops and 200 more Wi-Fi hotspots for the Phoenix Public Library system. The education funds come from federal coronavirus relief approved by Congress last year.

While any adult with a Phoenix library card can check out laptops and hotspots, the program has students in mind. The free borrowing program is under Phoenix Public Library’s College Depot program, which helps participants connect with the next level of education, apply for financial aid or scholarships, apply for apprenticeships and supplies other educational resources.
