Phoenix legalizes e-bikes for travel

Plans to make e-scooters permanent in downtown

Electric bicycles are now legal in Phoenix, and electric scooters are here to stay in downtown.

Though city staff acknowledges people have been riding e-bikes on streets, they were not technically legal in the city. In 2018, the state defined e-bikes and permitted their use, but it wasn’t until earlier this month that Phoenix City Council voted to update a city ordinance to add e-bikes to be allowable in Phoenix.

Council also voted to grant another extension to the e-scooter pilot program in downtown. The city has extended the e-scooter pilot program several times, and council has given every indication they eventually will become a permanent fixture in Phoenix.
