Phoenix-led crime crackdown leads to 580 arrests, uncovers weapons, drugs

A five-day multi-agency operation organized by the Phoenix Police Department resulted in hundreds of arrests for felonies along with the seizure of weapons and drugs.

“Last week, we rolled out our crime reduction plan to give the department a blueprint for addressing crime. That plan focuses on going after the small percentage of people committing the majority of crime," Interim Police Chief Michael Sullivan said.

“Operation Summer Shield did exactly that. We targeted the most violent people with outstanding warrants and prohibited possessors."

The operation took place June 5-9 when more than 580 arrests were made, more than 420 of which were for felonies. More than 500,000 fentanyl pills and more than 5 pounds of methamphetamine were seized.

More than 40 weapons were taken off the street - all of which were taken from prohibited possessors, police said.

“More than 230 of those arrested had a criminal history that included violence and 16 absconders of the Department of Corrections were located and brought back to prison,” police officials said in a release.

The operation, which took seven weeks to plan and coordinate with other agencies, cleared four homicide cases and close to 700 active warrants, police reported.

Among the those participating were the Maricopa County Attorney’s and Sheriff’s offices, the Arizona Department of Public Safety and several federal agencies, including the FBI.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said: “Now, my team has the opportunity to hold those who committed these crimes accountable to the law."
