Phoenix home invasion suspect booked on murder charge

A 19-year-old suspect in a home invasion has been booked for first-degree murder after another suspect in the case died following a gunfire exchange that occurred during the incident, Phoenix police said Friday.

Michael Valles, 19, who was in jail as a suspect in the Dec. 16 incident, was rebooked Jan. 2 on a first degree-murder charge due to the death of Pardo Espericueta, 28, who died Dec. 27 from injuries he received during the shooting, police said.

Detectives said they believe there are other outstanding suspects, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.

Officers responded about 1:15 a.m. Dec. 16 to a shooting in the 5800 block of South 54th Lane, learning on their way that several suspects forced entry into a home and exchanged gunfire with an occupant of the residence, the release stated. One of the suspects was shot and was on the ground outside of the home.

When officers arrived, they found Pardo Espericueta with at least one gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Robbery detectives “confirmed that multiple suspects forced entry into a home with multiple victims inside. Several of the suspects were armed as they entered the home,” police said in the release.

“When the suspects were inside the home, one of the victims armed themselves and exchanged gunfire with the suspects.”

That was when Pardo Espericueta was shot.  The remaining suspects fled the area on foot. None of the victims inside the home were significantly injured during this incident, according to the release.

Detectives identified Valles as a suspect, and he contacted investigators later that day and surrendered to police.  Valles was booked on various charges stemming from the investigation.
