Phoenix hits record 118 degrees, but there is good news

National Weather Service meteorologist says better days ahead this weekend

Wednesday was a weird day to get good news about Valley weather.

Phoenix set a record for July 9 heat when the mercury reached 118 degrees at 3:45 p.m. at Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service uses for the city’s official readings. It marked the hottest day of the year in the city – so far – and broke the previous July 9 mark of 116 set in 1958 and matched in 2024.

The normal high temperature in Phoenix for this time in July is 107.
