A Saturday morning crash near 5800 West Encanto Boulevard is under investigation, Phoenix police said.

The collision occurred about 6 a.m. Oct. 26 near 58th Drive and Encanto Boulevard. Officers responded and learned learned that a driver of one of the vehicles involved had run away from the scene, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.

The other driver, 51-year-old Aquileo Najera, had serious injuries.  Fire department personnel arrived and life-saving measures were attempted. Najera died at the scene.

Officers began to follow up on leads regarding the driver that left, leading them to Jesus Enrique Renteria Arroyo, 19, being identified as the driver who ran from the scene, the release stated, adding he was found at a nearby residence and arrested.

Preliminary information, according to detectives, suggests that the vehicle driven by Renteria Arroyo was southbound on 58th Drive at a high rate of speed when it ran the stop sign at Encanto Boulevard striking the vehicle driven by Najera, which was traveling eastbound on Encanto Boulevard.

“While in custody, Renteria Arroyo made admissions to being impaired,” the release stated.

He was processed for DUI and booked into jail on multiple counts of DUI, along with manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death or serious physical injury, police said.
