Phoenix has reduced its untested rape kit backlog, but many are still in process

Phoenix Police has drastically reduced its backlog of sexual assault kits in recent years, but it can still take up to five months for a survivor and the courts to get the results of a test back.

Phoenix’s backlog of untested sexual assault kits was reduced from more than 400 in 2023 to only about 50 last month. That’s required “a lot of hard work from the team over the last several years,” said Phoenix Crime Lab Administrator Benjamin Swanholm.

It has also required a lot of money.
