Phoenix expands free internet program for students

Program supplies free high-speed internet to students at home and school

The city of Phoenix is taking student internet access into its own hands.

City council voted Monday to spend another $5.4 million — on top of $2 million in 2020 — to install equipment to provide free internet access to students in central and southern Phoenix.

“Providing free high-speed access is a critical step towards ensuring equitable educational opportunities, enabling all students to thrive in our increasingly digital world,” said Councilmember Betty Guardado ahead of Monday’s 8-0 vote of approval.
