Phoenix creates victim advocacy office for police-related incidents

The city of Phoenix is creating a victim advocacy office specifically for victims — and their families — who experienced a traumatic incident involving Phoenix police.

The city’s Human Services Department already has a Family Advocacy Center to aid a wide range of victims. A recent staffing change will move five civilian positions out of the Phoenix Police Department into the Human Services Department to create the Family Advocacy Team, which will exclusively deal with police-involved incidents.

“Reallocating these positions to the Human Services Department is designed to enhance support for community members directly impacted by police department-related traumatic incident,” said Human Services Director Marchelle Franklin in last month’s Public Safety and Justice Subcommittee meeting.
