Phoenix council raises privacy concerns over license plate readers

Several Phoenix City Council members raised privacy concerns over the city’s use of automatic license plate readers, which have been in use since 2019.

Council was scheduled last week to vote to update the city’s contract because Motorola Solutions has bought the vendor, Vigilant Solutions. Instead, they postponed the vote until Wednesday, June 18, and asked for more information about how or if the system is audited to ensure law enforcement officers are not using the data system for improper reasons.

Assistant Police Chief Brian Lee noted Phoenix Police has policies that forbid officers from using any database for reasons not related to criminal justice and can result in discipline if misused.
