Effort aims to improve traffic safety

Phoenix City Council members pushed for more funding for streetlight improvements Tuesday aimed at adding to traffic safety, particularly for pedestrians.

Phoenix has been among the most deadly U.S. cities for pedestrians, and traffic safety solutions discussed by city officials have included increased lighting on streets.

During discussions of the city’s five-year capital improvement plans Tuesday, a majority of city council expressed an interest in increasing planned streetlight funding laid out by staff, which was $9.5 million over five years, including $2.6 million next year.
