Phoenix council members propose camping ban near schools, other areas

Phoenix now offers ‘Safe Outdoor Space’ for people to camp

Phoenix City Council Member Jim Waring said he took a personal trip to San Diego on Memorial Day last year. He said it was overrun with homeless encampments.

“What a mess. …Whatever you thought ‘The Zone’ looked like, they had a large swath of their city that looked exactly like it,” Waring said, referring to an area in downtown Phoenix commonly referred to as “The Zone” that until last fall was a hub for encampments of people experiencing homelessness.

Waring went back to San Diego on Labor Day. The major change in the few months between was the San Diego City Council passed and began enforcement of a ban on camping in certain areas such as those near schools, parks and along public transportation.
