The public is invited to El Grito on Thursday evening in downtown Phoenix.

City of Phoenix Sister Cities Commission and Phoenix council members Betty Guardado and Carlos Garcia have extended the invite to attend the traditional celebration of Mexican Independence Day.

The event consists of Mexican political leaders leading those gathered through a special cheer to celebrate the heroes of Mexico’s independence movement.

"I believe it is crucially important to celebrate our roots and where we come from and to share that cultural diversity with others," Guardado said. "I am proud to be part of the effort bringing this tradition to Phoenix."

The ceremony will take place on Adams Street between 1st and 3rd avenues, with the El Grito ceremony on the balcony of the Orpheum Theatre.

“I invite community members to join us at El Grito to celebrate culture, family and community and enjoy food, live music and more," Garcia said.

El Grito will run from 4 to 10 p.m.
