Phoenix council goes against local rep to approve affordable housing project

Betty Guardado says vote sets dangerous precedent

Phoenix City Council approved a rezoning last month for a Maryvale affordable apartment complex, going against the wishes of Councilmember Betty Guardado, who represents the area.

Guardado says this break from the council’s unofficial policy to support the local representative on zoning cases sets a bad precedent.

Though she supports adding more affordable housing, Guardado said a petition opposing the project was signed by 19 of 20 residents adjacent to the 6.5-acre site, which is south of the southeast corner of 75th Avenue and Camelback Road.
