Phoenix Council approves housing development after last-minute concessions

Developer agrees to reduce units from 193 to 166

A Phoenix housing development received City Council approval earlier this month after some last-minute concessions.

The 17.3-acre housing development at 40th Street and Southern Avenue split the community, with hundreds of residents each registering their support or opposition of the project. It split City Hall, too. The South Mountain Village Planning Committee recommended denial of the general plan and zoning changes the developer, the Brown Group, needed to build the housing development by an 11-8 vote, but the Planning Commission and city staff recommended approval.

Wednesday, May 5, hours before it would go before the general plan and zoning changes would go before City Council for a final vote of approval, the developer made several concessions, mainly knocking number of houses down from 193 to 166, to make the housing development more palatable to objecting neighbors and — hopefully — to City Council members who would decide the development’s fate.
