Phoenix considers adding 2 years to convention center contracts to make up for revenue lost in pandemic

When it comes to being broadsided by the coronavirus pandemic, business meetings and conventions were at the epicenter of destruction in the Valley.

“It’s no secret… Our industry has been truly decimated since last March. When it happened we were stopped dead in our tracks,” said Dan Shannon, vice president of Commonwealth Electric to a Phoenix subcommittee last week. Mr. Shannon’s company is the exclusion provider of utility services in the Phoenix Convention Center.

Phoenix asks the five companies it contracts with to provide exclusive services inside the city-owned convention center, at 100 N. Third St., to chip in millions of dollars for improvements to the facility. The companies then recoup that cost from revenue made from the center’s many events, of which the city also takes a percentage as commission.
