Phoenix commits to emergency COVID-19 shelters

Move targets elderly, at-risk

Over one year into the pandemic, Phoenix is renewing its commitment to helping the most vulnerable when it comes to housing.

During its March 17 meeting, the Phoenix City Council approved two ordinances related to emergency COVID-19 shelters. The first extended the city’s contract with Central Arizona Shelter Services until Sept. 30 and increased funding by $1,317,522 for “Project Haven,” which houses homeless seniors and those most at-risk for succumbing to the coronavirus.

The second ordinance allowed the city to enter into a new contract with CASS for rapid rehousing services, which includes short- or medium-term rental assistance. That contract will begin about Oct. 1 and run through March 31, 2022.
