Phoenix City Council passes resolution opposing Arizona’s abortion law
The Phoenix City Council has passed a resolution stating that women have the right to full reproductive healthcare access, including abortions.
The resolution directs that police not make enforcement of Arizona’s strict law a priority.
“We are going to focus on issues such as gun crime and not on arresting doctors, nurses and pharmacists,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said Tuesday when the resolution passed 6-2.

Councilman Sal DiCiccio voted no.
“I am firmly of the belief that the baby is a baby, and it is a person and deserves the same rights, the same protections” as anyone.
In a release, Councilwoman Debra Stark said abortion is healthcare, “and decisions about a woman’s reproductive health should be between a woman and her health care provider. Doctors and health care professionals who provide this care for their patients should not be criminalized.
“With this resolution, we affirm that calls to police of this nature will be the lowest priority for enforcement.
"Phoenix police officers do not need to be focused on calls about women’s reproductive healthcare choices, especially at a time when the Phoenix Police Department experiences staffing shortages. I fully support the right of women to have autonomy over their bodies.”
