Phoenix artists get 24 hours to take new plays from page to stage

Arizona playwrights, directors invited to create four new plays for December festival

The Phoenix Theatre Company is seeking Arizona playwrights and directors for its 24-Hour Theatre Project, which will challenge local artists to create four original short plays in a single day.

The project will take place Dec. 18-19 as part of the company’s 29th annual Richard P. Stahl Festival of New American Theatre, running Dec. 4-20.

Four playwrights and four directors will be selected in October. At 7 p.m. Dec. 18, playwrights, directors and actors will be randomly paired, with each playwright also drawing a setting and a first line of dialogue that must be incorporated into the script. Writers will then have until 7 a.m. the next morning to complete a 10- to 15-minute play. Directors and actors will rehearse and prepare the new works throughout Dec. 19 before all four are presented in a 7 p.m. public showcase that evening.
