Phoenix art space fights cancer with Oct. 8 fundraiser

This fall, residents across the Valley can get together to support the arts and cancer research during the Creatives Against Cancer event at Brightside Studios.

This is the space’s inaugural fundraiser since founders Brad and Vanessa Kuenn opened the business in February 2022. Free to the public, all proceeds from the event will go the International Myeloma Foundation and will feature lively local music, local vendors, food trucks and activities for the entire family 4-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8.

“Vanessa and I had always dreamt of the opportunity to give back in a big way,” said Brightside Studios Founder Brad Kuenn. “We’ve always believed that Phoenix creatives could positively impact the local community. Brightside encourages greater creativity and expression with a space aimed to generate collaboration and inspired connection.”

Phoenix art space fights cancer with Oct. 8 fundraiser

Posted

During the construction of Brightside Studios in August 2020, Brad was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. He started chemotherapy treatments and by March 2021, entered the hospital for an autologous bone marrow transplant.

“Once again, the opportunity for us to help our community felt like a far-off dream,” said Kuenn. “But when the word started getting out about my diagnosis, Vanessa and I were humbled to see all the community support and effort to keep Brightside alive.”

Four local muralists came to Brightside Studios to cover the interior of the building and support Brightside’s dream. Thanks to the community, the doors opened in February 2022. While Brad has recovered from the bone marrow transplant, he still has cancer, and wants to give back in a big way with this fundraiser.

The public can come by, grab some coffee and paint brushes, and create into the night! Musicians like Abby Walker, Shane Travis, and Jam Now will perform followed by a raffle, announced prizes, and an Elton John cover band to end the event.

Brightside Studios is open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.
