A man died at a hospital Monday following a pair of officer-involved shootings near 3500 West Washington Street, Phoenix police said.

Officers assigned to South Mountain Precinct responded about 12:10 p.m. Sept. 8 to an armed robbery near 35th Avenue and Fillmore Street where they were told a man had pointed a handgun at a man and took his cell phone, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.

A description of the suspect’s vehicle was provided, and officers near 35th Avenue and Washington Street saw it pull into a vacant field where it stopped.

“Officers requested additional units to pinch the vehicle in. While this occurred, officers saw the man point a handgun at them, and this is when the officer-involved shooting occurred,” the release stated.

The man attempted to drive north toward a dirt lot, but the vehicle became stuck.

Officers continued to give commands; however, the suspect pointed the handgun at the officers again, and a second officer-involved shooting occurred, police said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No one else was injured, police said.

The Department of Public Safety’s Major Incident Division will be investigating the shooting.
