Phoenix City Council on Wednesday approved new fare structures for light rail and transit aimed to provide discounts to riders under certain circumstances. The Valley Metro Board of Directors is set to vote on the same thing on Thursday.
Phoenix City Council also kicked the can down the road on approving four days per year where public transit will be free. Councilmember Ann O’Brien, who introduced the amendment, said she wanted the city and Valley Metro to first come to a consensus on which four days it will be and to study the economic impact of losing fares on those four days.
“Without that information, I don’t think we can responsibly say yes to this piece today,” O’Brien said during Wednesday’s city council meeting.
