After years of consideration, Phoenix City Council has committed to creating a Latino cultural center to celebrate a population that makes up more than two in five people in the city. Now at question are where that center will be and where the money will come from to pay for it.
City Council created a temporary subcommittee last year to examine creating such a center. Last week, City Council unanimously recommended the subcommittee’s final report, which included a recommendation to create a Latino cultural center.
The push for a Latino cultural center started nearly two decades ago when bond funding was made available for the expansion of a nonprofit cultural museum that ended up closing in 2008.
