Phoenix aims to stop heat-related deaths

In its first summer since Phoenix’s new Heat Response Office was created, city staff’s efforts will focus on preventing heat-related deaths among the homeless.

Nearly two-thirds of heat-related deaths in Phoenix during 2020 were homeless individuals, according to the Maricopa County of Public Health. The study also showed nearly two-thirds of victims of heat-related deaths in Phoenix had issues with substance abuse.
