Phoenix advances plan to spend $3M to gate 240 more alleys

As many as 2,500 alleys could be suitable for gates, staff says

The city of Phoenix is looking to close off more of its alleys.

The Public Safety and Justice Subcommittee recommended a $3 million increase in funding for the city’s Gated Alley Program, the largest funding increase since the program went city-wide in 2022. That funding request now goes to the full city council for final approval.

The program’s goal is to deter illegal dumping, graffiti and other criminal activity and nuisances in residential alleyways.
