Phoenix adds worker heat protections for city contractors

Jason Sangster said job sites in the Valley often lack sufficient drinking water for workers that his trade union, Ironworkers Local 75 regularly supplies water to workers of other companies to ensure their safety.

Sangster, speaking to Phoenix City Council last week, said a 26-year-old worker in north Phoenix the week before had lost consciousness due to dehydration though it was only 78 degrees.

The city of Phoenix took a step to ensure such heat-related illnesses don’t occur for workers contracted with the city, especially as many work outside as temperatures climb above 110 in the summer. With a 7-0 vote, council passed an amendment to city code that provides protective measures against the heat for workers for companies with contracts, licenses or leases with the city.
