Phoenix added park security in 2023, but some on council say it’s not enough

Phoenix has upped its police presence at city parks to curb crime, but some say the effort needs even more presence.

“The kids are playing soccer around the folks that are doing drugs and experiencing homelessness,” Phoenix Councilmember Betty Guardado said about the state of Maryvale Park at 51st and Campbell avenues during a subcommittee meeting this month.

Councilmember Jim Waring pointed out in the few days before the meeting there had been an incident of shots fired, a stabbing and a person found dead at Phoenix city parks.
