Philip Eugene Coates

It is with a heavy heart to announce that Philip Eugene Coates passed away peacefully in Sun City West, AZ, on July 17, 2026, at the age of 97 years young. Born November 29th, 1928, in Oak Hill, WV to Arthur and Ida (Grounds) Coates.
Philip served in the Navy from 1946-1948, serving on two ships during World War II, the U.S.S. Philippine at Sea, and the U.S.S. Siboney. He was a first-class Seaman and earned the World War II Victory Medal, and honorably discharging thereafter.
Following his military service, Philip then worked for the Internal Revenue Service until he later retired to Arizona in 1988.
He was predeceased by his beloved spouse, Marilyn (Derr) Coates, who Philip now joins in eternal rest, and his parents, Arthur and Ida.
Philip left behind no children; he will be remembered for his unique presence and impact he had on those who knew him. Words cannot fully capture a lifetime; Philip’s memory will remain in the hearts of all his friends he left behind.
Philip will be joining Marilyn in eternal rest at Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church, in Sun City West, AZ.
