Gilbert mayor vows continued fight against housing bill

Gilbert Mayor Brigette Peterson is vowing to continue to fight against a housing bill wending its way through the Arizona Senate.

Arizona Senate Bill 1117, sponsored by Sen. Steve Kaiser, R-Phoenix, is being pitched as a means to build housing faster and address the housing shortage. However, Peterson and officials from some other municipalities say it strips municipalities of their ability to control local zoning and wipes out their general plans.

Kaiser has denied that and touted to Capitol Media Services the elimination of design standards at the municipal level as a positive that would provide variety in housing, eliminating cookie cutter designs.
