Personal experience informs Gilbert leader's new mission

Former Councilmember Kathy Tilque leads effort to support Gilbert Advocacy Center with new foundation

Before she was Kathy Tilque — the dynamic woman who has spent nearly three decades as a leading voice in Gilbert — she was Kathy, the married mother of a 2-year-old in 1980s small-town Texas who was scared.

There was violence in the marriage, perhaps not as dire as for some women, but it was escalating. She never feared for her son, she said, until the last time, the last time when she knew she had to leave.

She needed help finding an attorney. She went into the office of a man she calls a “huge cowboy attorney,” who was decked out in cowboy hat, jeans and a big belt buckle. She told him of her fears for herself and long term for her son.
