The city of Peoria will celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Saturday, Jan. 13.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Peoria Community Center, 8335 W. Jefferson St., in downtown Peoria, the public is invited to check out arts and cultural activities. The event will include participatory African drumming demonstrations with Dr. Lydia Woods of Drum Arizona, live music from the Rio Grande band, live mural painting, spoken word performances, health and wellness vendors, service projects, and community resources.

First Things First will be handing out free multi-cultural books for children, as well as providing information and resources on their programs. Created by Arizona voters, First Things First partners with families and communities to help the state’s young children be ready for success in kindergarten and beyond.

Additional featured local nonprofits and service organizations scheduled for Peoria’s MLK Day of Service & Celebration include Bloom 365, Foundation for Senior Living, Adelante Healthcare WIC Services & Benefits, Hart Pantry, Mentally Anonymous, Vibrant Communities, and Contexture.

On-site service projects will be offered through Packages From Home and Peoria Family and Youth Services that allow attendees to construct care packages for stationed or deployed U.S. military members oversees, and activity bags for children in transitional homes.

The event ceremony on the main stage begins at 11 a.m. with a Presentation of the Colors by Buffalo Soldiers of America, and the National Anthem and Black National Anthem performance by Francine Reed.

A complimentary plated meal will be served in the auditorium of the Peoria Community Center from noon to 1:30 pm, with spoken word performances at 12:45 and 1:30 p.m.
