Peoria Unified board stalls bathroom executive session

Transgender conversation to take place in public

In a rare turn of events during the Feb. 23 Peoria Unified School District governing board meeting, the board voted not to go into an executive session that was listed on the agenda.

The board had intended to talk behind closed doors and receive legal advice about Title IX, a federal law that prohibits discrimination in schools. More specifically, the board had planned to discuss the law as it relates to transgender students using the bathroom they identify with.

But after hearing comments from the public and concerns from board member Heather Rooks, as well as having discussion on the matter, a motion by the board to go into executive session failed by a 4-1 vote.
