Peoria Unified board renews arts education memberships amid backlash

Approval comes with attestation letter

Student artists and arts supporters flooded the Peoria Unified School District administrative offices for the Aug. 28 meeting to urge the governing board to approve the renewal of memberships for certain arts education groups.

On the possible chopping block were Educational Theatre Association, National Association for Music Education and National Dance Education Organization, which are recognized as professional bodies for their respective disciplines.

Membership in these groups provides access to curriculum resources, adjudication standards, professional development and student opportunities for participation in festivals, competitions, and recognition programs, according to a staff report.
